What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that develops when a patient experiences an obstruction in the mouth, such as the tongue, soft palate, or other oral structure. This form of sleep apnea is referred to as obstructive sleep apnea and it is the most common form of sleep apnea. As these blockages occur during sleep, it can cause people to snore very loudly and even choke and gasp for air, forcefully waking them up. This makes it impossible to get a full night’s sleep due to constant interruptions (or apneas) throughout the night.
